Montessori Education Methods

Kindergarten in Montessori schools is a unique approach to early childhood education that focuses not just on academic subjects, but also on social-emotional development, creativity, and independent learning. In a Montessori kindergarten class, children are free to make choices and follow their own interests, supported by the guidance of a supportive teacher. They are encouraged to explore and understand their world through hands-on activities and self-directed learning, which allows them to develop key skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity.

Montessori kindergarten classes are organized around three major “planes” of development: cognitive, sensory-motor, and language. These planes are designed to allow children to develop their skills at their own pace, with the teacher providing guidance and support to help them succeed. In the cognitive plane, children learn through hands-on exploration and manipulation of materials, while in the sensory-motor plane they learn through sensory experiences like climbing, running, and jumping.

In addition to learning through play and exploration, kindergarten in Montessori schools often involves more formal instruction in literacy and math skills, as well as social-emotional development and life skills. With a focus on self-directed learning, children are encouraged to take ownership of their own learning and develop the confidence and skills they need to excel in school and beyond. Overall, kindergarten in Montessori schools provides a unique and effective approach to early childhood education that sets children up for success in a way that few other models can match.
